In order to take an FCC exam with the GCARC VE Team, the candidate is best advised to pre-register for the exam, choosing the desired exam date from the available exam sessions, and pre-paying for the exam at the time of registration.
Start out by pointing your browser to https://hamstudy.org/sessions/GCARC-VE/all to start the registration process. This will show you the current upcoming sessions offered by our VE Team. If you want to see additional future dates, click the “Load More” button beneath the listed dates. To return to the previously-listed dates, click the “Reset Dates” button at the top of the session list.
To register for an exam session, click the green field containing the date of your chosen session (see below).

That will launch the registration starting page, as shown below…

Choose one of the Registration buttons at the bottom of the page to start the registration process. Simply follow the instructions provided on each page as you go through the process, until the registration is complete. It makes no difference which registration route is selected; ExamTools has simply retained accessibility to the popular older method when the new registration process was introduced. This is helpful for individuals who have used the system before, in that there would be a certain level of familiarity with the older registration process. New license candidates would probably be best off using the new process, as those individuals would have no experience with the old method to serve as an aid.
An important point here is that if you anticipate taking more than one exam at the session for which you are registering, be sure to select all of the exams for which you might possibly want to sit. There is no additional fee for additional exams, so long as a passing score is posted for each exam as you progress through a given session. For example, suppose a new license candidate comes in to take the Element 2 (Technician) exam. That exam is successfully completed with a passing score being posted, and the candidate wishes to attempt the General (Element 3) exam. That is completely acceptable and is done at no additional charge. The candidate can continue testing, taking additional exams until either all Elements have been passed or until a failing score is posted.
However, should the candidate fail to post a passing score and wishes to attempt to re-take the failed exam, that candidate will need to submit a new registration and pay another exam fee. The exam offered to that candidate would then be a different exam with a different set of questions from the exam just completed.
It is at the discretion of the GCARC VE Team as to whether or not any candidate would be permitted to attempt any additional exams, with the decision being based mostly on the remaining time available before the end of the session. Another factor that can influence the permissibility of re-taking additional exams would be the score posted on the first attempt. If a candidate’s score is close to a passing score, it is more likely that the Team would advise taking another try at the exam. However, if the posted score is substantially short of a passing score, the Team will most likely recommend that the candidate do some more studying and undergo additional practice testing before attempting the exam again.
At the end of the registration process, you will be given a four-digit PIN that you will need to bring with you to the testing center on the date of your exam. You will also need this PIN when you make payment for the exam fee in the next step.
After registering, you will need to return to this site, to the appropriate Payment page, to pre-pay for your exam. There is one Payment page for adult candidates, and another for youthful candidates.
