In order to obtain an Amateur Radio operator’s license, it is mandatory that you first obtain a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Registration Number, commonly called an “FRN”. While this is a fairly straight-forward proposition, it can nonetheless be confusing to those who are unfamiliar with dealing with the FCC
The FRN becomes your permanent record “key” that the FCC will use to correlate any and all licenses that you may obtain as time goes by. It will appear on the face of each of your licenses and will not change even if your call sign(s) should change.
